Week 4 - Summary + Thesis Draft #1

Topic: Autodesk Revit Summary: Autodesk Revit is a leading Building Information Modeling (BIM) software designed to help architects, engineers, and construction professionals in creating accurate and detailed 3D models of buildings and infrastructure projects. Unlike traditional drafting software, Revit integrates design, documentation, and collaboration into a single platform, allowing users to work with dynamic, data-rich models that evolve throughout the project lifecycle. This real-time updating capability minimizes errors, improves coordination between different project teams, and ensures a more efficient design and construction process.  Revit is widely adopted in the architecture, engineering, and construction industries due to its ability to handle complex structures, its compatibility with various disciplines, and its contribution to sustainability and cost-efficiency. Thesis: Autodesk Revit revolutionizes the architecture, engineering, and construction industries by enh...

Week 3 Buddy Activity - Research Pathway Blogpost

Week 3 Partners Activity - Nic & Chanelle We chose Autodesk Revit. Here are our reasons: Nic: During the 3 years of Diploma studies, we learnt how to use Autodesk 3D Revit even during our internship. Autodesk Revit is the most commonly used technology in the Built Environment Industry along with Autodesk Autocad. Revit is able to draw from basement carpark floor plan to level 1 floor plan all the way up to rooftop level floor plan on it’s own even without autocad. Revit is able to provide 3D View Navigation by turning 360°. This allows for better presentation during meetings across different industries to showcase to viewers from outside view to inside the BTO flat rooms. Chanelle: Ever since learning about Revit from my previous diploma, I’ve been hooked into the software. I find it very freely as it allows me to visualise and broadcast my ideas on a building easily. In my opinion, Revit is the most manageable and user-friendly out of all the autodesk 3D modeling software so far. ...

Factors Affecting My University Studies - Critical Thinking and Reflection

Problem Scenario: Revision for Modules by Modules Ideal Commit fully during my revision in the lecture notes then to the tutorials. Reality(gap) I am always searching for interesting places to visit rather than to study. Causes/Conditions As old age catches up, I often lose interest in university studies. Effects/Results Lack of sleep and time preparing for tests and exams which causes last minute revision. Goal Start revising after every lecture and tutorial lessons everyday once I get home. Possible change Switch off my phone and put it away. Testing the hypothesis > solution After school, try to go to quiet environment such as starbucks or coffeebean to start revision modules by modules. Outcome of change Able to finish my revision for lecture notes exercises and tutorials early on. This would help me to finish ...

Unit 02 - Self-Introduction letter to a professor via email (4.2)

4.2 Self-introduction letter to a professor via email Subject: Self-introduction To Whom It May Concern, My name is Steve Jonas, and I am writing to introduce myself to you as a student in your communication class. Having graduated from the poly with a Diploma in Civil Engineering, my work was in the robotics sector for four years and I eventually made the decision to further my studies in the Engineering Programme offered by SIT. My goal for studying in this Programme is to develop my Technical Knowledge, cultivate professional contacts and improve on my communication skills. Hoping to refine my technical writing skills and practice giving presentations, this module will be important for me. My short-term career aim is to become a certified professional engineer. My long- term one is to be involved in and ultimately oversee high impact projects, both local and international. In terms of weakness in Communication, I still have difficulty expressing myself confidently in re...

Formal email to Professor

Dear Professor Blackstone, I trust you had a great weekend. My name is Nic Voon and I am one of your students in the Critical Thinking and Communication class this trimester. I would like to introduce myself and let you know more about my background, communication strengths and weaknesses, specific goals of this module and what differentiates me from others. I graduated with a Diploma in Civil Engineering from BCA Academy in April 2022. After spending two years in the National Service, I chose to further my studies in Bachelors in Civil Engineering with SIT University in September 2024 as I always find construction and engineering interesting and challenging. Since young, I was fascinated with the skyscraper in Singapore and wondered how all these high-rise buildings were built from scratch. In addition, my father is a general manager of a reputable construction company in Singapore and he always shared with me numerous technical challenges he faced in his projects and how his teams th...

Week 1 Blogpost

Task 3: The Importance of communication skills for engineers  "Developing excellent communication skills is absolutely essential to effective leadership. The leader must be able to share knowledge and ideas to transmit a sense of urgency and enthusiasm to others. If a leader can't get a message across clearly and motivate others to act on it, then having a message doesn't even matter." Gilbert Amelio, former President and CEO of National Semiconductor Corp Excellent communication skills are absolute essential to effective leadership. This is especially true in build environment industry. The leader of an engineering or construction firm needs to communicate effectively to all stakeholders such as architects, engineers, sub-contractrors, workers, etc., and motivate them to ensure smooth execution and successful completion of a project. The leader needs to convey clearly important messages such as project objectives and requirements, project timelines and milestones, ch...
