Task 3: The Importance of communication skills for engineers

"Developing excellent communication skills is absolutely essential to effective leadership. The leader must be able to share knowledge and ideas to transmit a sense of urgency and enthusiasm to others. If a leader can't get a message across clearly and motivate others to act on it, then having a message doesn't even matter."

Gilbert Amelio, former President and CEO of National Semiconductor Corp

Excellent communication skills are absolute essential to effective leadership. This is especially true in build environment industry. The leader of an engineering or construction firm needs to communicate effectively to all stakeholders such as architects, engineers, sub-contractrors, workers, etc., and motivate them to ensure smooth execution and successful completion of a project. The leader needs to convey clearly important messages such as project objectives and requirements, project timelines and milestones, challenges during the varius construction phases, etc., to all parties involved in the project as any mistake resulted from miscommunication will have huge cost and time implication.

    1. For example in the building construction industry, speaking from my Diploma internship experience in the construction site, working under the hot sun is one of life's most difficult decision to make, hence I have learnt some of best ways to motivate my colleagues which is to acknowledge the project's progress is better than it was yesterday. Apart from arguing, we would get the different departments such as Architecture, M&E and Structural departments to come into one meeting room to discuss how to move forward if we are stuck without skipping anyone's steps and not having to waste loads of money in the construction sites.

    1. During my Diploma Internship, I took the opportunity to broaden my horizons beyond and above. It has taught me that during tough times even under the hot sun, to achieve quickly for Singapore's way of Life is to ensure the work the PTE LTD company and I was doing could lead this construction company to become one of the best standards working alongside with our Singapore Government Agencies which is to hand over these HDB Blocks to our dearest Residents successfully. Hence, my team and I needed to come up with our own meeting and plan since the very beginning til the end without much delay in works and we happened to achieve our goals without fatal accidents.
