Week 13_Submission 3.2: Critical Reflection
This reflection
has two parts, with roughly 250-300 words for each section:
3.2.1 Module learning: Refer to the goals you set yourself at the start of the course. Using what you have learned about critical thinking and reflections, reflect on the extent to which you have achieved (or not) the said objectives. You must also reflect on what you have done in terms of building on your communication and critical thinking skills, as well as what you should do to further improve these skills.
Since the first day of Critical Thinking lesson, I learnt about the importance of effective communication. Since I was given a week 1 assignment, with my passon in Civil Engineering, I did my research carefully on the Construction Relevant topic which led to Excellent communication skills are absolute essential to effective leadership. This is especially true in build environment industry. The leader of an engineering or construction firm needs to communicate effectively to all stakeholders such as architects, engineers, sub-contractrors, workers, etc., and motivate them to ensure smooth execution and successful completion of a project. The leader needs to convey clearly important messages such as project objectives and requirements, project timelines and milestones, challenges during the varius construction phases, etc., to all parties involved in the project as any mistake resulted from miscommunication will have huge cost and time implication.
I proceed to respond or to reply well to my classmates and Professor's questions in my blogpost by thinking critically before replying to train myself to be more professional in the construction industry when replying to my colleagues.
I learnt to speak clearly in my speeches during critical thinking lessons to my classmates which acted as my audiences, at the same time to answer certain questions on the spot when prompted by Professor which taught me to think critically within seconds to answer and bring across the main message to the class and how it affects our future in the construction industry.
Finally, I got to work well with a partner to bring across our main message to our classmates of using construction related topic such as autocad since we are entering the construction industry very soon.
Overall, I learnt to present myself well to my classmates and my Professor which prepared myself well for the construction industry soon.
3.2.2 Choose one
focus of your research project and critically reflect on
your learning. Discuss specific points, such as presentation skills, writing
skills, or
teamwork skills. DO NOT just describe what you did and whether you liked it.
Rather, explain what you learned about yourself and others in the process. For
instance, how has this experience changed your view of learning? What might you
take from this project experience?
First and foremost, since my group and I chose this topic called: Microsoft Hololens 2 in Construction Industry, I chose this focus of the research project which would be the introduction of Microsoft Hololens 2 as it would bring across the main message clearly to audiences. First of all, I did not believe in choosing this group topic however since our group could agree all together to do this topic so all of us started off this group topic together.
Initially, I did not understand much about the topic and needed to do more research about the topic. After doing my research and doing the group project with my group mates, then I started to understand more purpose of why we are actually using the construction industry relevant product.
With the help of my friends, I could enjoy the process of doing the group report togeher with my group mates, enhancing our presentation slides to be at the best level for presenting when we could think about how to prepare ourselves for example thinking about how we are going to present our slides and bring across our main message of our product during our future IWSP to our colleagues and Bosses in the construction industry. This is especially important because if my group and I does not prepare ourselves well now during our opportunity in class, there is a high chance we will not be doing well during our IWSP internship.
This project experience about this microsoft hololens 2 changed my perspective about not judging a book by its cover even though it might seem like just a "spectacle tool product" in my first thought in the construction industry. It also taught me to be more open to more topics which are relevant to the construction industry.
Thank you, Nic this interesting and detailed reflection. I appreciaate all the work you did this term and the way you adapted to the changing tasks and expectations. All the best in your continuing learning journey and for life in general!
ReplyDeleteDear Professor Brad Blackstone
DeleteThis is Nic Voon, your S10 Civil Engineering student, I would to thank Professor very much for your guidance in every step of my SIT University study journey. From this Critical Thinking and Communicating module, I learnt and absorbed much on how to bring myself to higher level of expectations which would hit with higher level of Professionalism and Hardwork in the Construction Industry as I come face to face with my Bosses in my upcoming IWSP Internship and future full-time Job very soon upon graduation with SIT.
I, too wish Professor all the best in your future endeavours, as hardwork and realism is where people from all walks of life would bring across their daily activities!
Future Endeavours
